Why Alpaca

Before it's a sock, a beanie, or a sweater, it's alpaca fiber — and that's not a marketing detail. It's the actual reason Allen Paca pieces perform the way they do. Here's what makes this fiber different, and why we build everything we make around it.

  • Naturally Hypoallergenic
  • Warmer, Not Heavier
  • Breathable
  • Odor-Resistant
  • 20+ Natural Colors

Naturally hypoallergenic

Alpaca fiber contains no lanolin — the natural oil in sheep's wool that's usually the real cause of a "wool allergy." Most people who find sheep's wool itchy or irritating can wear alpaca without any issue.

Warmer and lighter, not heavier

Alpacas live through some of the widest temperature swings on the planet, high in the Andes, and their fleece evolved for it. Each fiber has tiny hollow air pockets running through it, trapping warmth without adding bulk. Fiber for fiber, alpaca is about three times lighter than sheep's wool for the same amount of warmth.

Breathable and odor-resistant

That same hollow structure lets air move through the fiber instead of trapping moisture and odor against your skin the way synthetic fabrics do. It's why an Allen Paca piece can go multiple wears between washes — see our Care Guide for the specifics on socks, hats, and sweaters.

20+ natural colors, no harsh dyes required

Alpaca fleece grows naturally in more than 20 shades, from cream and fawn to charcoal and true black. A lot of what you see on an Allen Paca piece is the fiber's own natural color, not a dye lot — including our undyed, unbleached Eco-Alpaca sweaters.

Raised gently, sourced responsibly

Alpacas graze lightly compared to most livestock, so the farms that raise them don't need harsh chemicals to manage the land. We're intentional about sourcing from manufacturers who operate on fair-trade principles, supporting the same Peruvian artisan trade that's been working this fiber for generations.

What this means in an Allen Paca piece

Every product line is built around these same fiber properties: our socks lean on alpaca's temperature-regulating, hypoallergenic, odor-resistant qualities for everyday wear; our sweaters let the undyed fiber speak for itself; and our hats and vintage finds carry the same natural warmth-without-weight, piece after piece.
